The Simpson Lever Chain
The Simpson Lever Chain was invented by William Spears Simpson in 1895, in England.
How It Works: -Linked triangles form two levels of chain. One level is driven by the chainring while the other level drives the rear cog. Instead of teeth, the chainring and cog had grooves.
Pictured below is an example of a Simpson Lever Chain in use. As you can see, the chain is quite large as opposed to the modern "sedis" chain.
