- Evidence: The shaft starts as a solid piece of cold rolled steel and is milled down to specific dimensions which can be seen by the smooth lines on the outside of the shaft. The threads at the end are also milled after the width is determined to be true. The counterweights at the end of the crankshaft are forged out of a piece of steel which is evident through the rounded edges and the straight lines present on the side of the weights from the force of the die on the metal.
