General Function

The function of the printer is to move a piece of paper through as it dispenses ink onto the paper in a specified arrangment.

Human Machine Interface (HMI)

This section contains components that interact with humans.

Control buttons/panel
- Operation - power - press once and printer turns on, press again and turns off
- Operation - paper - light shows that paper is needed, button pressed once, after paper refilled, to finish print job
- Operation - cancel - press once to cancel print job

Computer (cord from computer to printer)
- Operation - person sends job to printer using computer program

Sensing

This section contains components that interact with the world.

Optical encoder
- Operation - uses some sort of counting method to indicate if paper is not there.

Circled section identifies the encoder and sensor.

Cartridge detector
- Operation - indicates if ink cartridges are not inserted.

Circled section identifies the detector.

Ink detector
- Operation - indicates if ink cartridges are low of ink.

Movements

There are a lot of moving parts in a printer.

Flaps on either side move up and down to help pick up the inserted paper.

The black part circled is one flap in the "up" position.

Cartidges move along rod by the help of a belt that is turned by a motor.

Here is the back of the cartridge holder, showing the belt running through it.

Rods and wheels rotate to move the paper.

Here is the system of parts that contribute to the movement of the paper.

Cartidge holder moves in and out of position depending on whether it is in use or not.

Circled is the belt and the rod that help to move the cartridge holder. The cartridge holder is in the "stored" position when it is all the way over to this side.

Power Supply

100-240 Volt DC Motors (3) (50/60 Hz, 0.7 A)
- Needs to provide the needed torque to move the belt to translate the cartridges.

The motor that moves the belt is circled.

- Needs to provide the needed torque to translate the cartidges in and out of position.

The motor that assists the movement of the cartridge holder.

- Needs to provide the needed torque to move the flaps and wheels to move the paper.

The motor that assists the movement of the paper is circled.

Electric motors tend to provde high angular velocitiers with relatively low torques.

Power Conversion

Gear transmission.

Circled areas show the gear reductions.

Increases torque and decreases speed.

Motion Conversion

Needs to convert a rotary input from the motor to a linear output of the cartidge holder.

Intelligence

Needs to monitor inputs from humans and the outside world and to control operations accordingly.
Microprocessor and accompanying circuitry.
Multiple circuit boards.
- Communicate between computer and printer.
