Project Work Proposal
- The disassembly of our product, The Mr. Coffee coffee maker, will be done in a series of sections and steps. The following is an outline of how group 26 will most likely disassemble our product and approximately how long it will take for each step. These times include not only the time taken to disassemble the coffee maker, but to also document, photograph, and plan the disassembly.
- Since We have not yet disassembled our Product, we are going to assume that the reassembly process will be just reverse of the disassembly. We will be sure to document each step so that we can follow these steps in reverse durring reassembly.
- For this process, a number of tools will be required. This is a list of the tools that we know we will require for disassembly prior to even beginning the process. This will be helpful in allowing us to be prepared for the disassembly.
- Screwdriver (both Philips and flat head)
- Pliers (small and narrow preferably)
- Small flash light (to avoid breaking internal parts as we remove them)
SECTION 1: External and simple disassembly
(20-40 minutes)
- Summary: There are going to be some parts that are designed with daily disassembly and occasional maintenance in mind. These parts and components will be simple to dissect and will be very obvious in how to do so.
- Step 1: Filter
- We will remove the filter basket area from the coffee maker. This will be simple as it is designed to be removed daily.
- Step 2: The Base
- We will separate the base of the coffee maker from the top part of the product, thus enabling us to get to the inner components of the coffee maker.
- Step 3: Documentation and planning
- Once we have removed the base, we will be able to see into the coffee maker. We will first document what each of the now visible inner parts and components look like. We will photograph what it looks like while still assembled inside, and we will plan out how we will remove these inner parts.
SECTION 2: Interior component removal
(About 1 hour, but this could vary once we see the inside of the coffee maker)
- Summary: Now that the base is removed and we can see the interior parts and have them properly documented, we can begin to remove the parts. This will include removing the heating unit and thermostat device.
- Step 1: Removal of parts
- We will begin this part of the disassembly by removing each interior part as a unit (meaning we won’t remove components yet) and setting them aside.
- Step 2: Documentation
- Once all the internal parts are removed, we will document them and photograph them. Then we will set up a plan for taking the components of these parts apart, with research prior to this. We want to be sure we know the function of the devices before we separate them. We will also begin a detailed materials log on the parts.
SECTION 3: Component Breakdown
(About 2 hours, but could vary based on above section)
- Summary: This section will consist of the parts breakdown into specific components. We will separate things such as tubing and wiring. We will also complete our materials log. This will be the final section as far as actual disassembly.
- Step 1: Separate parts from each other
- We will begin by separating the parts that are connected (if any) by wires and tubing. This will enable us to take individual parts acting as a system and separate them from the system. We will properly document and diagram this stage, as it will be important for reassembly.
- Step 2: Component division
- We will then take each part and divide it into components that cannot be broken down further. This will conclude disassembly
- Step 3: Final Documentation
- We will then finish a detailed materials log, photograph the components, and diagram these components. We will file a copy of all of this data away for use in reconstruction and for CAD drawings of the components.
Total of approximately 3-4 hours (this is for disassembly and documentation)

Management Proposal
Group Assessment:
- Group 26 is very capable of adapting to whatever is needed. Each group member is capable of all of the work at hand, and no one is particularly better off than others at any of the work. We do have some things to work on however. Group 26 needs to become more organized and plan ahead more. We have made it this far with minimal planning, but it cannot continue in the future. We need to set up a system of set group meetings, rather than random meetings of three or four members at a time. Once we get this organization down, we will be set for future work and we will do well on this project.
- We will be split into two main teams, but we will all be helping each other with each step of the project. This is a breakdown of the main responsibilities of each member.
Dissection Team
- Project Team Leader: Andrew Ballacchanio
- Tasks: Keep group organization, set up meetings, Manage time, Oversee and assist with dissection of product and documentation.
- Project Dissection Leader: Salman Chethil
- Tasks: Bulk of dissection process, Photographing of product and parts, Assist with documentation, bulk of reassembly
- Project Documenter: John Leung
- Tasks: Document the processes taken in dissection and reassembly, Format a parts list, materials list, and keep all documentation organized, assist in reassembly
Wiki and Solid Modeling Team
- Project Wiki Manager: Michael Vanderwalker
- Tasks: Formation and upkeep of the wiki page, Assist with solid modeling, Organization of documents and pictures.
- Project Solid model Manager: Vincent Buttimer
- Tasks: Assist in the formation of the wiki page, Solid modeling of parts, Organization of documents and pictures
Communication with the Group:
Our group will stay in touch with email and weekly group meetings. We will also keep in touch with our cell phones. For contact with our group, send an email to any of the group members and they will forward it to the rest of the group.

Our group plans to meet every Friday afternoon, as well as Dissection team meetings during office hours to use the lab (wiki team will also join them most of the time). The wiki Team will also meet up to work on the wiki several times during each gate (Dissection team will also join when available or needed). We also plan to meet before and after each lecture for a few minutes to talk about progress. Our final set meeting time will be two nights before the due date of each gate. Any problems that our group has, we plan to settle with group meetings and group discussions. If the problem can not or does not get fixed, we will email Professor Cormier and set up a meeting with him.
