Technical report revisions
Revision has been made to Gate 3 by correcting and filling in the missing parts of the component from for the product analysis part. For each components description of the dimensions, manufacturing processes and material are included. A product complexity profile and a compressed .zip file of the CAD views has also added to Gate 3.
Revision has been made to Gate 4, too by adding information to the design revisions part, follow by rearrange the photo layout to present the gate material in a more organized way. The original assembly is also discussed in the revised gate entry.
Oral Presentation
The presentation of the product and its design revisions were delivered by Yong Chyi Lim. The following are a copy of the materials there were presented in class on Friday, December 9th, 2011:
Product Background
- General Motors (GM) 2200 OHV
- 2.2 L, inline 4 cylinder engine
- Known as GM Vortec engine in truck models
- 1990 – 2003
- Replaced by GM 2.2L ecotec engine
Design motivations
- Societal - Performance appeal to wider consumer
- Global - Vehicle Emission Standards around the globe
- Environmental - Reduce emission
- Economic - Increase efficiency
Proposed Solution
- Replace overhead valve (OHV) system with overhead cam (OHC) system
- Eliminate push rod ,lifter and rocker arm, change the position of camshaft so that camshaft lode can direct contact with valves
Pros/Cons of Design Revisions
Pros
- Increase efficiency - Require less energy for the movement of valve
- Increase performance - Better timing of open/closing of valve gate at high RPM
Cons
- Requires a more complex timing belt or chain with related components
- Requires a more complex packaging of camshaft
Where Do We Go From Here
- Additional information - Weigh the pros and cons of the system
- Further analysis - Rubber belt vs. Chain belt/Max. RPM of the engine
- Technology to be researched - Technology is readily available; Further research on the implement of the technology on the product
