Introduction
The internal combustion engine has become an essential part of our daily life. Without this effective and reliable machine, there would be no cars, trains, or even electrical generators. The internal combustion engine works by combining fuel and air to create a high temperature and pressure mixture. After this mixture is combusted, the high pressure in the combustion chamber pushes on the piston, causing it to move. This repetitive process is how the engine generates power. The starter assembly for this Briggs and Stratton engine consists of a starter clutch, shroud, and a pull cord. Pulling on this pull cord turns the crankshaft, which causes a spark in the combustion chamber. This spark begins the combustion process, thus igniting the engine.
History
The starter that is used on this engine is very closely related to the earliest of starter systems. The hand crank was a primitive method of starting an internal combustion engine. When the crank was turned, it would initiate the movement of the pistons, causing a spark, and ignition. The pull start method for this engine is based on the same principle. New methods for starting an engine are far superior than the hand crank and pull start technique. An electric starter uses a motor to initiate the combustion process.
Components
1. Starter Clutch- The starter clutch is connected to the crankshaft. When you pull the string, it spins the crankshaft which starts the combustion process. It only engages the flywheel in one direction, which prevents engagement while running.
2. Pull Cord- The pull cord is wrapped around the starter clutch, and when it is pulled, the starter clutch spins the crankshaft, and this starts the combustion process.
3. Shroud- The shroud is the metal piece that provides housing for the starter assembly. It also provides safety from the flywheel, which can spin at very high speeds.
4. Spring coil- The spring coil is a long, thin piece of metal inside the shroud, and under the starter clutch. It is wound up to act like a spring, so the pull cord is pulled back into the starter assembly after pulling.
