Description
The muffler is a crucial part of any type of engine. It's main purpose is to silence or "muffle" the sound leaving from the engine. The muffler is a part of the exhaust system, usually located on the exhaust pipe.
How it works
The muffler decreases the speed of the exhaust gases by one of two methods. The first is by absorbing the sound waves and the second is by reflecting waves from the same sound source, which will cause interference and cancel out the waves. Inside the muffler there are tubes which are created to cause the reflecting waves as stated before. The gases and sound waves enter through the center tube, then bounce off of the back of the muffler which reflects the waves through the hole into the main section of the muffler. After the waves enter the main portion of the muffler, they move through a bunch of holes located in a different chamber and then leave through the end pipe. When the waves first enter the muffler, they go through a chamber known as the resonator. The resonator is set at a specific length and air volume in order to create the reflective wave which will cancel out the sound.
Evolution
The muffler was created by a French mechanical engineer by the name of Eugene Houdry. He created it sometime around the 1950's but it really did not arise until the mid 1970's. This was due to the fact that gas still contained lead, and the muffler system could not be utilized. All cars that hit the markets in 1975 were required to have mufflers installed. Its main purpose was to reduce the fowl air and sounds leaving and engine. As years past, mufflers have developed to make different types of sounds or no sounds. Dual-exhaust systems were the next big leap in muffler design, but not much really changed besides the catalytic converters. Mufflers are now a part of any gas or diesel engines.
