 The Black and Decker™ jigsaw is a product designed for the average do it yourself person.  It is a base model of many variant designs of the jigsaw.  Its function meets the needs of a person with its performance and its price.  Over the past semester our group has analyzed and dissected this product to improve our understanding of its underlying functions and manufacturing considerations.
 	After dissecting the jigsaw we found multiple subsystems of the jigsaw that worked together to cut material, which was its overall function.  First we observed that the electrical power from the plug was transferred to a motor when the user pulls the trigger. The rotational mechanical energy produced by the motor was then transferred to a gear transfer to decrease its rpm.  From there the gear sent its rotational mechanical energy to a scotch yolk assembly where it was converted to oscillating mechanical energy to propel the saw blade up and down.  The dissection process occurred in gate two where it was fully documented.  The analysis of the components and their interactions also occurred in gate two.
-	The third gate was where we looked into specific parts and found their manufacturing methods and also the four factors of manufacturing that affected their design.  In gate three we also analyzed our product for possible ways to improve or optimize its design.  For each modification we developed an analysis process for the revision.  In gate four we reported how the jigsaw was reassembled and also finalized three of our best design revision.  For each design revision we considered how each change would affect the products original manufacturing design factors.  The best design revision we created was an addition of an angled scale for beveled cuts.  This design would increase the functionality of the jigsaw without increasing its price too much.  The added functionality would set apart this jigsaw from its competitors without compromising price.  The other two design revision that would improve the jigsaw was an added battery and a dust collector.

 	After all the possible revisions were developed for the jigsaw we looked at the four factors and what changed after the revision.  We then weighed the importance of each factor and how it affected the products marketability.  We found that consumers mostly care about the price and serviceability of a product.  After that realization we learned that out of the four factors we changed, even if we added a negative factor to the product, the positive sometimes outweighed the negative in the change.

 Group 7 was assigned the task of analyzing, dissecting, and reanalyzing  a Black and Decker(TM) jigsaw.  Over the semester our group will investigate our products design, functionality, aesthetics, and other engineering design criterion.  The whole project will be separated into five gates which will be completed by the designated due date.
