As part of our MAE 277 course, we are required to select a mechanically operating product, and dissect it to reveal its internal mechanisms and workings. For our project, we chose to examine a 1962 upright spinet piano made by Star Piano. We chose to dissect a piano because of it's uniqueness as well as a common interest in musical instruments among the group members. The idea of taking apart a piano seemed ominous to our group at first, but we felt that we were willing to take on whatever is required for the task at hand. In addition to the piano, we also purchased a spare action (not for the same model of piano, but still an action) that may be taken apart in lieu of taking apart the piano's action. We decided that the extra action was necessary due to the fact that the fragile inner parts may be inadvertently damaged in our dissection process, so an extra action provides an insurance option just in case.
