This wiki contains an online users guide for the Delorme-Earthmate PN-20 hand held GPS unit. The user guide encompasses a basic manual as well as product information and troubleshooting. This Wiki effectively demonstrates why collecting information via the user base of a product could ultimately lead to a better structure for basic product references than a user manual. A majority of the information on this page will have been collected by first hand experience by operating the device. Some information was taken from the users manual, and some was found from other existing sources.
For our group, this was the first time any of us have created and maintained a wiki, so this project will also allow most of us to gain useful knowledge on how the creation, structure, accessibility, and practicality of a wiki as a useful tool on the internet.

The Delorme Earthmate PN-20
] Released in January 2007, the Delorme PN-20 was a new and innovative handheld GPS platform. The device's distinguishing feature is its ability to download and store topographic, aerial, and satellite images all of which can be downloaded from Delorme. With this ability the device is able to offer multiple views of the same GPS location (nautical charts, satellite imagery, topographic views, etc.). It features a brightly lit screen that works well in total darkness or in direct sunlight, offering a maximum usability in a wide range of lighting conditions. Built with the true outdoors-man in mind, the PN-20 features an impact resistant, waterproof housing and sturdy construction. The device also has user friendly large buttons which are good for use with winter gloves in cold winter environments. Featuring the latest developments in GPS technology the device touts outstanding signal acquisition and retention which means it will work well in your car or even in the densest tree covered jungles. The NP-20 also offers a sizable amount of onboard memory, 75MB, allowing the user to create and store up to 50 routes or 1000 user-defined waypoints. In all the Delorme NP-20 is a very capable handheld GPS unit, rich in features and in adaptable software.

|Technical Specifications|| General:
The PN-20 comes with map software including road maps and topographical maps. These should be installed before the PN-20 is used for the first time. The device does not have the capacity to hold every map available so the user must select the maps they wish to upload. By using the software that comes with the PN-20, select maps can be downloaded to the SD card provided by Delorme, and inserted into the device.
To install the memory chip, remove the back of the battery compartment. Under where the battery lies is a holster for the memory chip. Once inserted, the batteries can be installed as well. (Delorme, 2007)
The PN-20 requires two AA batteries to operate. A travel accessory can be purchased which comes with a rechargeable single lithium-ion battery pack. To install the batteries, unscrew and remove the back panel of the device and insert the batteries according to the positioning indicated by the PN-20 inside the compartment. (Delorme, 2007) Be sure to reattach the back panel in order for the device to work properly.
Charging the PN-20
If you are using the travel pack, you can charge the single Lithium-ion battery while it is in the unit by connecting the unit to your computer via the USB cable. The device must be powered on for it to charge and will not charge as fast as removing the battery and charging it in its wall unit.
To pan a map which is currently being viewed, move the cursor to the edge of the map (using the arrow buttons) in the direction you wish to pan. Once at the edge of the map, hold the directional button in the same direction and the map will adjust its orientation.
The maps will automatically pan if using the navigation/route page to orient your current position as the center of the map.
Map object information
By placing the cursor over a map object, you can:
1. Press enter to obtain any available information.
2. Press enter to view a menu of available objects to view. (For multiple objects on the same point)
3. Highlight and select "Mark" to save as a waypoint.
The most widely used function of the PN-20 is for navigation or tracking. The difference between the two is technically small, but the implications are wide.
Navigating allows you to use the PN-20 to follow a predetermined route with directions and a colored path on the digital map.
Tracking will happen when the PN-20 is being used out of navigation mode, and will track the path being taken by the PN-20 with a trail on the digital map.

Ways to use the PN-20
The PN-20 is a tool which can be widely applied to various aspects of different hobbies, jobs, situations and scenarios. These are only a few of the endless posibilities of how the PN-20 can be utilized. What can YOU do with it?
Geocaching is a popular GPS treasure hunting game where the sought out points are obtained and then hunted down like a scavenger hunt. They are gaining in popularity all over the world and can be found all over the country.
By planning out a bike trail, or using the PN-20 to see a satellite image map to select the best trails for your trip, mountain biking can be an easy, fun experience for even the most novice rider.
GIS data managing
GIS, also known as a geographical information system or geospatial information system, is any system for capturing, storing, analyzing and managing data and associated attributes which are spatially referenced to Earth. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIS, 2007) These can include elevation measuring, farm soil monitoring, urban planning and logistics.
Use the PN-20 to mark your favorite camping sites as waypoints. Close by streams, trails, peaks, and food sources could also be marked as waypoints and saved under your favorite camping location. You can even locate the closest emergency response location.
The Satellites Page
This gps unit, runs off of satellites in order to find the correct position. It has three different kinds of fixes, 2-D, 3-D, and WAAS. When the gps reads no fix, it says it does not have sufficient satellite information to find your position.
A 2-D connection means that the unit has a connection with the a satellite. This typically means that it is only connected to three satellites and it might not have a the same accuracy as a 3-D connection. The best way to fix this would be to move until you get a better signal and can obtain a 3-D connection.
A 3-D connection is on the device when it is connected to at least three satellites and also has no overhead obstructions (trees, buildings, tunnels, etc...).
If a WAAS connection is obtained, a small icon will appear on the gps screen. The advantage of this connection is that it has up to five times greater accuracy than the normal 2-D or 3-D connection. This technology is only available for use in the United States.
In this device there are two options for viewing satellite strength and what you actually are connected to, they are called Satellite Constellation or Signal Graph. The satellite constellation allows you to the satellite identification numbers that you are connected to. In this mode there are satellite shaped icons that show each of their positions relative to the device's current position. The signal graph also allows you to see the identification numbers of the connected satellites. Rather than seeing satellite icons, they are represented through a bar graph of sorts. This graph tells the user which satellite has the best connection (larger the bar, greater the connection).
Both in the satellite constellation and signal graph the icons are color coordinated for ease of recognizing the quality of data. The different colors are red, green, and blue, red being the poorest, while blue is the signal that you want. In particular, red indicates that the gps receiver is tracking the satellite, but it is not receiving any information. The green icon means that the gps is tracking the satellite, and it is able to be used as a navigation device. The blue icon is much the same as the green except that if the blue is available, that means there is WAAS corrections available.
As far as accuracy goes with the gps, the actual unit with a good connection can locate within 10 meters. The WAAS feature is technology that was developed by the FAA and this changes the normal +/- 10 meters into +/- 3 meters or any spot, provided you have the connection that allows for this (Blue icon).
The Maps Page
When the gps device has obtained either a 2-D or 3-D connection, the unit fixes on your position. This means that if a connection is achieved, then when you look at the map, your exact location will appear. If a connection is not available and the maps page is brought up, then the unit will display the last location that a signal was present. On the map itself your location will be indicated by an arrow and that arrow too is color coded to distinguish what kind of fix the unit has. The colors displayed are red, blue, yellow, and green. The red means that the gps unit has no gps signal, the blue indicates that the device is in Track Playback mode or Simulate Navigation mode. If a yellow or blue arrow appears on your screen, than the unit has a 2-D or 3-D signal respectively. When viewing the maps, a North arrow can be shown by selecting the Heading Up, or Course Up option.
This particular device comes with a base map showing high level world and United States coverage. Some other maps/data types that are compatiable are:

- World Base Data
Once the maps are on the screen, if you want to hide some of the data on screen to make the map larger, you go through the "menu" and select "info fields", and then select "hide info fields". If you would want to keep the information fields but change what is within them you go to "menu", "info fields', then select "change info fields" and then from there you select what you want to be displayed.
|Back on Course||The direction of travel needed to return to the route while continuing in the direction of the destination. Expressed in degrees.|
|Battery Life||The percentage of battery power that remains|
|Bearing||The direction of travel from the current location to the destination (finish or next stop). Expressed in degrees. Displays a green arrow pointing in the direction of the next waypoint or route point. The arrow is grayed out when no movement is reported by the device. It is green when the device is moving.|
|Coordinates:Primary||The coordinates for the current GPS location, cursor position, or map center in the primary format. The default is Lat/Lon. You can change the format in Device Setup>Units>Coordinates: Primary.|

A feature of the maps that can be used on this gps is finding the distance of a perimeter or line and area of a polygon. To do this go to "menu" and select "measure distance", from this you then use the cursor on the screen to select points to find a distance and once it is closed the area will be calculated.
With this gps, you can download maps externally from the device and then put them on the unit. Once on the unit, you can sort which maps you want to see and which you do not. To do this go to "menu", "map setup", and select "data management". Once your in this option you can select what maps you want to hide and which you want to display.
The Compass Page
The compass page is a digital version of a physical floating needle compass. As the heading changes, the compass rotates so that the heading is always pointed up. Another option that can done is to set a heading or a waypoint and the compass arrow will stay true to that setting. If you were to stray off course, the compass feature would also guide you back onto the route. Using the gps as a compass is a very easy task.
From the main menu, go to the compass page and from there use the arrows to select a waypoint or plotted course for the compass to track.
This feature is handy because it allows you to be able to follow a course and if you were to go off track, it the needle would then point you back in the direction needed to stay on course.
The Trip Info Page
While viewing the Earthmate GPS PN-20 Trip Info Page, there will be eight areas of information displayed on the screen in normal view (or three areas in large text mode). Default areas of information will include the "Coodinates:Lat/Lon", "Trips:Odometer", "Trip Moving", "Trip Stopped", "Trip Total", "Speed", "Max Speed" and "Avg Speed."
- "Coodinates:Lat/Lon" will show you your current latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates based on direction and bearing.
- "Trips:Odometer" shows the total distance you have traveled from start to your current location.
- The "Trip Moving" section will show the time, from start to present, that you and your GPS have been moving.
- The "Trip Stopped" section shows the amount of time that you and your GPS have stopped during your current trip, if you are not moving in any direction, the "Trip Moving" field will stop and the "Trip Stopped" section will begin again.
- "Trip Total" is the combination of both the "Trip Moving" time and the "Trip Stopped" time; it is the overall time from which you started your trip to the current time.
- "Speed" section will show your current traveling speed in mph,
- "Max Speed" will show your fastest speed obtained during your trip
- "Avg Speed" shows your average speed during your whole trip.
The stated eight areas of information are default settings but can be changed to your individual preferences.
|CHANGE THE INFORMATION FIELDS||Starting from the Trip Info Page, hit <menu> and using your arrow keypad, highlight "Change Info Fields" and press <enter>. Now, highlight the area of information you would like to change and press <enter>. This will show you your available options to select from. Choose your new area of information and again press <enter>. Feel free to customize as much as you want and when you finish simply press <quit>.|
|SHOW LARGE TEXT||Starting from the Trip Info Page, hit <menu> and using your arrow keypad, highlight "Show Large Text" and press <enter>. In order to specifically change which fields you would like to display in large text mode, press <menu>, and highlight "Change Info Fields." Now, highlight the information field you would like to change and press <enter>. Lastly, use the arrow keypad to highlight the information fields you would like to add and press <enter>. Repeat these steps for each information field you would like to change.|
|RESTORE TO DEFAULT SETTINGS||Starting from the Trip Info Page, hit <menu>. Then, highlight "Restore Default Settings" and press <enter>.|
You may also want to reset some of your trip information, either during your current trip, or before starting a new trip. To reset all information, start at the Trip Info Page, press <menu>, highlight "Reset Info" and hit <enter>.
To only delete specific information, use the following table.

The Find Page
The "Find Button" is used for searching addresses, roads, cities, coordinates, waypoints, ect. The two different search options for this GPS include "Find Near Map Center" and "Find by Name."
- "Find Near Map Center" will find all points of interest located near the center of the map that you are viewing.
- "Find by Name" search will find your points of interest for a specific location.
The "Find Near Map Center" search option is the default option. If you would like to use "Find by Name" you simply press <menu> while in the "Find Page." After pressing <menu>, the "Find Near Map Center" search option will be highlighted. Using your arrow keys move down and select the "Find by Name" option and press <enter>. If you start on "Find Near Map Center" the process works visa versa.

From here you can either save/delete the waypoint, center the map around the waypoint or create a route using the waypoint by using the arrow keypad to highlight "Mark"/"Delete", "View" or "Route" buttons and pressing <enter> respectively.
The Waypoints Page
The bottom most button on your GPS, the one that looks like a push pin, is the "Mark" button. It can be used to create waypoints on your map. After you create each waypoint you can choose your own name, symbol, coordinates, elevation, time/date and original comments for that specific waypoint.
Customizing/Editing Your Waypoint
- Press the <Mark> button to create your waypoint. Then, to customize your waypoint use the arrow keys to highlight the piece of information you would like to change and press <enter>. Now, using the arrow keys again, scroll through the available options and hit <enter>. If you are creating text, be sure to hit <enter> after each letter. Once you have your waypoint customized you can edit it using the same steps as described.
You can also use the "Mark" button to average your waypoint. Using this, the GPS will take multiple readings around your waypoint and average them to increase the accuracy of the readings.
Averaging Your Waypoint
- Averaging can only be done at a current waypoint so first, press the <Mark> button to create your waypoint. Then, highlight the "Ave" button and press <enter>. This will show you the readings the GPS has taken at your specific point. The more readings you take the less error there will be, thus repeating this step as many times as possible will give you your most accurate readings. Once you finish with your readings, use your arrow keys to highlight "Ok" and press <enter>, and "Save" and again press <enter>.
When you have known waypoints that you have created and you may also want to find the distance and bearing from them to your current location.
Viewing Your Waypoints
- Go to the "Waypoint" page. From here you will see all of your current waypoints that you have marked previously. If you highlight one and press <enter> you will find all the information on that specific waypoint including the bearing and distance to that waypoint from your current location.
The main purpose of the waypoints, and essentially the GPS, is to be able to find routes to your desired location.
Creating a Route With Your Waypoint
- Select a waypoint either from the "Map" page or the "Waypoint" page, and press <enter>. Now, select the "Route" button, press <enter> and then the "Navigate" button, and press <enter>. This will create and calculate the best route available.
Centering your waypoint on your map is the best way to see what landmarks are around your waypoint.
Centering Your Waypoint
- Select your waypoint, either from the "Map" page or the "Waypoint" page, and press <enter>. Then, simply highlight "View", press <enter> and your map will be centered on your waypoint.
Old waypoints may want to be deleted to reduce clutter and create better simplicity.
- Select your waypoint, either from the "Map" page or the "Waypoint" page, and press <enter>. Then, highlight "Delete" and press <enter>. Here you have time to confirm that you are deleting the correct waypoint. If it is correct, use your arrow keys to highlight "Yes" and press <enter>.
- To delete all of your current waypoints press <Menu>. Now select "Delete All Waypoints" and a confirmation table will again arise. If you wish to proceed, use your arrow keys to highlight "Yes" and press <enter>.
The Routes Page
This page will allow you to create a route and then view its directions by several methods:
- From your current location to a waypoint
- From you current location to a Find search result
- Between two waypoints
- Between two Find search results
- Between a way point and a Find search result
To get started create a new route on the Routes Page by selecting <new>:
- You should replace the default name with something familiar to you by highlighting the <route name> field and using the keypad to enter a new identifier.
- To add a route point select <add point> and then use the Find functions (link to find page here) to specify your preference. Simply hit <add> to add the search result as a point on route. Continue repeating this step until you have entered all the desired route points.
- Once all the route points have been selected select <calculation method> and choose from <road/direct> depending on how you would like to travel; <road> will follow the route using known roads while <direct> will connect each point with a straight line.
- Finally, select<navigate> and if the calculation is successful the route will display on the map page (add link)
To use your GPS like a car’s navigation system use the ‘simulate navigation’ feature. This will make the route display on the map and the device beep at each applicable turn. To activate this feature:
- Select the desired route from the Route Page.
- Press <menu> and select <simulate navigation> by pressing <ok>. This will cause the curser to go into simulate mode and plays the route on the map.
- To end a simulation press <menu> and <stop simulation>.
- Active routes display in the Routes Page with red text.
- You can also select <use map> to select a route point using the map instead. You may find this function easier to use because you can simply continue to pan and select points instead of searching the database.
- To exit Navigation mode press <menu> and select <stop navigating>.
- To exclude your current GPS location from the route points simply select <current position> and then <remove>.
The Tracks Page
When you first use your PN-20 is will automatically have a default setting that enables GPS tracks. This feature essentially leave a “breadcrumb trail” as you travel, recording and storing your progress. In it’s most basic form the trail will display on your GPS as a dotted line, however the color of the line indicates multiple things:
- If the line is green, the GPS has a 3-D fix.
- If the line is yellow, the GPS has a 2-D fix.
It is important to note that this feature will operate continuously with no input from the user, but only so long as the GPS can acquire a fix. If the connection is interrupted no trail will be displayed and the last know point will be marked by a red line.
|SAVE||Stores the current track to memory for later use.||To save an active track simply highlight <save> on the Tracks Page and press <enter>. The track name, color, and comments can all be changed by first selecting the track, and then choosing their respective tabs and inputting information. You may also view, follow, or delete the track from this page as well.|
|CLEAR||Deletes the current track.||Hit <clear> on the Tracks Page|
|FOLLOW THE CURRENT TRACK||Reverses a track so you can follow your footsteps backwards.||From the Tracks Page select a saved track, then hit <follow>.|
|VIEW/FOLLOW AN EXISTING TRACK||Allows user to revisit and follow a previously saved track.||Selecting the desired track from the main page will display the details of that trip (red text indicates visibility on the map). Simply hit <view> and the track will display on your GPS, at which point you may use any of the above functions; when you are done return to the detail page of that track and select <hide>.|
The PN-20 also provides you with the ability to choose how tracking data will be collected and stored. There are two ways by which information is logged, points are based on either time or distance. Time based logging provides detailed results, but uses more points and memory. Distance based logging takes longer to track, but is useful for long distances. Your PN-20 manual has detailed instructions on how to change this setting.
The Sun/Moon Page
The Sun/Moon Page can be used to view information about the rise and fall of earth’s celestial bodies including the various phases of the moon. The images displaying in the center of your screen represent the current conditions based on the time and date settings which are displaying at the top.
The left graphic is the location of the sun/moon in relation to a compass. The right graphic shows where the sun/moon is currently as it follows a trajectory from east to west.
You can also set the current date and time, though this does not affect the devices time. Adjusting these features is relatively simple, simply select the desired one with the keypad and scroll to the desired value.
The Tide Page
The tide page can be used to predict the high and low tide for any date, time, or tide station. This feature paired with the nautical chart views and the waterproof capability make this an invaluable tool for any fisherman.
In order to access this feature first the user must open the Tide Page. After this has been done use the arrow keys to highlight the TIME field and press ENTER. From here use the arrow keys to select the desired timeframe. When the appropriate time has been selected, press ENTER. To set the date simply repeat the process only this time highlight the DATE field. Now you will have to select the tide station. To do this use the arrow keys to highlight the TIDE STATION drop down menu and press ENTER. Now use the arrows to select the available locations and press ENTER. Now the tidal information for the selected time, date, and tide station will be displayed in a graph at the bottom of the screen. The graph shows the entire 24 Hour period for the date selected. The red dot depicts the time selected by the user.
If you modified the time and date of the Tide Page and wish to view it in realtime the process is as follows. When you are in the Tide Page press the MENU key. Use the arrow keys to highlight RESET TIME AND DATE. Press ENTER. The time and date in the Tide Page will now be updated to the time set on the NP-20 (realtime).
The Hunting/Fishing Page
The NP-20 also features a hunt/fish calendar. This is useful for predicting what types of hunting and fishing conditions are in the current GPS location. The device will then read out the best times to go, the times that are good to go, and a prediction of how good the day is going to be.
Open the HUNT/FISH page. From this page use the arrow keys to highlight the DATE field and press ENTER. Use the arrow keys to change the date around. Left or Right arrows select the field while Up and Down keys change the field numbers. Once the desired time is selected press ENTER. If you would like to see what the hunting and fishing conditions are at the current time and you have adjusted the date the process is simply. While in the Hunt/Fish screen press MENU. Highlight RESET DATE and press ENTER. The display will correct itself and return to the date and time that is set in the NP-20's clock.
The Device Setup Page
The device setup page allows the user to customize their NP-20. Features that can be changed include time settings, unit settings, system settings, display settings, interface settings, and sound settings.
Modifying the system settings is used to update GPS settings, WAAS status, battery type, and USB power setting. From the device setup page highlight the SYSTEM option and press ENTER. To update the GPS setting highlight the GPS SETTING drop down menu and press ENTER. From her you can select normal, power saving, or disable GPS. When the desired function is attained press ENTER. The normal setting acquires satellites and updates the map once per second. Power saving mode reduces the backlight to 10% of its intensity and changes the backlight timer to 15 seconds. Disable GPS turns off the GPS capabilities so the system will not search for a signal although all other options will remain usable.
The Display Settings can be altered to update the device's color scheme, backlight intensity, and backlight timer. From the device setup page highlight the DISPLAY option and press enter. Now highlight the COLOR SCHEME drop down menu and press ENTER. 5 color schemes are available, Spring (green), Summer (yellow), Autumn (orange), Winter (blue), and Midnight (a high contrast scheme which is good for nighttime usage). Next the Backlight intensity can be modified to suit the user's needs. In the display page highlight backlight intensity and press the arrow key left or right in order to change the background brightness. Finally the user can also alter the the mount of time the screen will stay lit. From the display page highlight BACKLIGHT TIMER and press ENTER. Now highlight the time interval desired and press ENTER. Choosing a shorter background time will help increase battery life. At any time if the user wishes to go back to the device setup page, simply press QUIT.
System Interface Settings are used to change the serial port and USB settings. The settings chosen here rely on the users computer operating system, type of cable used to connect the device to the computer, and if the user is trying to access information on a removable media (SD) card. To alter these settings highlight the INTERFACE option from the device setup page, press ENTER. If you are using a serial cable highlight enable serial port and press ENTER. A check will now appear in the enable serial port box, indicating that the feature is one. To change this simply highlight ENABLE SERIAL PORT and press ENTER, the box will now be unchecked. If you are connecting using a USB cable highlight the USB SETTING drop down list and press ENTER. From her highlight Delorme or one of the Mass Storage options and press ENTER. If you would like to access your SD but do not have an SD reader select MASS STORAGE: SD/MMC CARD as the USB setting. Press QUIT to return to the device setup page.
To change the sound settings highlight the SOUND option from the device setup menu and press ENTER. Here you change the power sound, button press sound, message sound, turn alert sound, volume of the sounds, or even mute all sounds. To change the sound of some function, select the drop-down menu for which function you want to change then press ENTER. From here select which sound you want then press ENTER. The process is the same for the volume adjustment and mute options. Press QUIT to return to the device setup page.
Modifying the Time Settings changes the devices time zone, time format, and daylight savings time preferences. From the Device Setup page highlight the TIME option and press ENTER. To modify time format highlight the TIME FORMAT drop-down list and press ENTER. Now select whether or not you would like to have the time be read out in Local 12 hour or Local 24 hour format and press ENTER. To adjust the time zone highlight the ZONE drop-down menu and press ENTER. Use the arrow keys to select which time zone is desired and press ENTER. To change the daylight saving time option highlight the DAYLIGHT SAVING drop-down menu. Select whether you want the option on or off then press ENTER. Press QUIT to return to the device setup page.
You may find it necessary to hide some unused menu options from your home screen. To do this go to the device setup page and select the PAGE ORDER option. Now highlight the page you do not want to see anymore with the PAGE button and press ENTER to clear the check box. Cleared check boxes mean that the page is inactive or hidden from view. To add a menu option select which option you would like to add back to the home screen and press ENTER to check the box next to the option. To switch the order of the pages highlight the page you would like to move. Now use the arrow keypad to highlight the up or down button located on the side of the screen. Once you have selected up or down press ENTER. Repeat this process until all the options are in the desired order.
To change the units that the device reads highlight the UNITS option in the device setup page and press ENTER. In here you will find that you can adjust the Primary Coordinates, Secondary Coordinates, Datum, Measures, and Bearing units. To do so select which units you would like to change by highlighting the drop-down menu assigned to the units you would like to change. Once you have highlighted the units that are going to be changed press ENTER. In here you will be prompted to select the format of the units desired. Select the units desired and press ENTER. Press QUIT to return to the sevice setup page.
To restore all options back to the default settings go to RESTORE SETUP DEFAULTS in the device setup page and press ENTER. The device has now been restored back to the default settings. Press QUIT to return to the device setup page.
Unit will not turn on - Check the batteries. Replace, or recharge if necessary.
Unit will not pick up any (or enough) Satellites - Your location may be devoid of clear enough space to locate orbiting satellites. This could be caused by tall trees, buildings, or very bad weather.
Unit is not being accurate - The necessary amount of satellites may not be located by the PN-20.
Conclusion remarks. Each person should write their own reflection.
- Casey - This project was a good experience in many ways. I enjoyed taking on an open ended project based on creating a wiki. I thought the basis for our article that we as a group created was outlined really well. It brought together information from other wikis, product manuals, and some information you can only get by personal observation. Because of this I think we have created a superior document of which can be used as a general reference for this very specific product. As a project, it was interesting to participate in a project where most of the work was done separately verses together as a whole. It was interesting to communicate almost solely by email, yet be able to put together a clear and concise set of information.
- Gabrielle - The idea to create a wiki over a written report has allowed us to really think about the wiki user's needs, which is what lead to our main goal of developing an easy-to-use wiki manual for the product. We have taken information from the existing manual received with the product and put it into a very user-friendly page along with additional helpful information. I believe that individuals could definitely use this wiki to learn about how to operate this product correctly.
- Keith - I feel like this project helped me learn in two or three differnet areas. First of all, it helped me understand the basics on how to use this particular piece of equipment. Second, I learned about how to use and create a wiki. Lastly, it helped me learn about how to put together a project over the internet. This wiki was not only a learning experience for ourselves but I believe it could actually be put into the real wiki and help others with the GPS understand better how to use it then with the original manual that came with it.
- Sarah - This was one of those projects that I feel really helps me with my other classes. I never would have set out to learn how to create a wiki on my own, but having done it now I see many applications to use it again in the future. What I particularly like about our project is that it can function as a real wiki and be incredibly useful as an alternative to the user manual.
- Jon - While I did learn how to operate the Delorme GPS unit and got to understand how useful GPS can be, both for recreational and business purposes, I found that what I learned more about was how to use a wiki. I learned how to move pictures around, insert hyperlinks, and format articles. This is something i would not have learned on my own and it seems as though this may be a very useful skill in the future.
