## Project Summary

The Kobalt ½ inch pneumatic impact wrench is an air powered tool used to tighten and remove fasteners. For this project the tool was taken apart and all of its components were studied. The manner in which the components work together was also taken into account to better understand why certain parts are shaped the way they are. In addition, we studied the geometry and material of each component in order to determine how it was likely manufactured.

This specific model of the Kobalt ½ inch pneumatic impact wrench has a maximum torque output listed at 350 foot pounds. It runs at 7,200 rpm +/- %10 and intakes a working air pressure of 90 psi. In order to use the tool the user first selects a forward torque level of either high (about 350 ft-lb), medium (about 280 ft-lb), low (about 170 ft-lb), or reverse for removing a fastener. The user then pulls a trigger which allows the air into the motor housing. This turns the rotor which then rotates 2 large hammers which in turn collide with a smaller anvil, thus rotating the anvil with high levels of torque.

In this project, our group first laid out a plan of action that would provide all of our members with their respective roles and associated responsibilities. This became our outline and was something we adjusted regularly to accommodate project goals. We then proceeded to dissect the tool and document the process step by step. After wards, we took a very close look at each individual part to determine its specific function and how that determined its geometry. We proposed mathematical models that may be useful in understanding how to measure the produced torque. Once we had developed a thorough understanding of how the tool worked and how all of the components worked together we made suggestions for design changes that could be made to address several GSEE factors.

## Gate 1 - Project Planning

This gate goes through the planning required for the project. It starts out with a section on project management. This section has a work proposal that discusses the goals of the project. There is a management proposal that discusses each members role in the group and their responsibilities. the product archaeology section discusses several things about the object. These are the history and the development of the wrench. It also discusses the usage profile, energy profile, complexity profile, and materials profile. Finally there is a alternatives section.

## Gate 2 - Product Dissection

This gate is all about the dissection of the impact wrench. First the Project Management section goes through what each member did for this gate and certain challenges they faced. Then there is a step by step dissection of the tool. This includes pictures and is labeled for ease. Finally there is a section that goes over how the subsections are connected.

## Gate 3 - Product Analysis

With the product having been dissected in gate 2, the group can now analyze it more thoroughly. This gate includes a standard project management table that shows how everything is going for each member and possible corrective actions that may need to be taken. Along with that there is the component summary. This contains a parts list for the impact wrench and how each part is manufactured. The product analysis goes through the engineering decisions made during the design of the product. There is a solid modeling portion with a rendered view as well as some engineering drawings of the parts assembled. The engineering analysis shows how the analysis process would be used during the designing phase. Finally, the design revision portion recommends three possible changes for the product.

## Gate 4 - Project Explanation and Reassembly

This gate has several parts. The first part is project management. This section discusses the roles of each member and challenges faced. The next section is the reassembly, where videos of the wrench being reassembled are shown and the process is described. There is a section that describes the mechanisms used in the impact wrench and finally a section with three design revisions on the system level.
