 The bicycle economy has been growing rapidly over the past decade, as more and more people are buying bicycles as well as participating in bicycle tourism. Bicycle tourism is beginning to become more popular, whether it is on bike trails in a city or along a rural road. This leads to more people buying from local stores, in turn boosting local economies. The map below shows a more detailed spread of the effects of bicycles on the economy.

For example, Wisconsin sees the most impact from bicycles to the tune of over $1 Billion a year. The next two states to see the most impact were Vermont and Iowa, which both brought in over $400 Million. Vermont is special though in the fact that 1,400 jobs were created from bicycles and bicycle tourism alone. Iowa's major impact comes from it's annual cross-state bicycle touring event named the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa or (RAGBRAI). It is the oldest and largest bicycle touring event in the world. Spectators and participants alike pump plenty of cash into small town economies during the seven-day event.

-According to a 2006 study, at least one in five Americans sixteen years and older mountain bike. Bike trails can be extremely beneficial to local economies, such as was the case with Dunedin, Florida, which had a 35% storefront vacancy rate that jumped up to a 100% rate after the Pinellas Trail was opened. Similarly in a case study, the Virginia Creeper Trail brought in $2.5 million to the state of Virginia, and over $1.5 million was spent in the local economies. In addition, 53% of the trail users came from outside the local areas. Other local trails found similar success to that of the Virginia Creeper Trail. The Lafayette Trail, Heritage Trail, and Saint Mark’s Trail each respectively brought in $2.3 million, $5 million, and $10.6 million. Bike trails also significantly increase money brought in from business, restaurant, and lodging tax revenues, along with increased tourism related business.
