|Our group was assigned to analyze the Kodak zoom disposable camera. Aspects of the camera that we were asked to examine include overall design concept, specific components and their respective functions and features, materials and manufacturing processes used, and develop possible design improvements. Before disassembly began, our group identified the purpose of the camera and made assumptions of how it works. We then tested the camera to see if it worked, predicted how many components make up the complete device, and how many different materials were used. During the disassembly every removed piece and tool used was recorded.   The internal pieces of the camera were already numbered- we assumed they were used for assembling the camera at the manufacturing factory. Disassembly of the camera took approximately one hour, while reassembly took only about half an hour. The camera was primarily composed of plastic- with a few small metal and electronic components. Plastic is an excellent material to be used for a one-time use camera because it is inexpensive and can be easily recycled and reused. &lt;br /&gt;

First we removed the stickers from back cover with our fingernails.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Then we pried off back cover with small screwdriver and a pocket knife.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We removed the battery.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We removed the film and winding spool and rolled up the film.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We then pried off front cover with the small screwdriver.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We then began working on the front of the camera. We removed the flat metal spring that holds part 5, the double lens toggle. We removed part 5.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We then popped off the little coil spring that hooks part 9, the plate that the double lens toggle mounts on, to part 1, which is a black connecting piece.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Once the spring was off parts 1 and 12 fell off. Part 12 is a connecting rod. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We then took off the tiny copper spring that connects the shutter to a fixed point on the circuit board. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We then began working on the top of the camera. We took off part 9, which is clear plastic; and then took off part 16, which is a gray plastic part.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Then we took the &amp;quot;number of pictures remaining&amp;quot; wheel off, the winding wheel, the winding cam, and part 32, which connects the cam to the winding wheel.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Next we took the copper brace that holds part 4, the viewing lens in place. We removed part 4.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We then took off a blue plastic piece that was also labeled 9, that was underneath the viewing lens.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We then went back to the front of the camera and pried off part 9, the toggle zoom plate, with the small screwdriver and a pocket knife.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Then part 2, the big gray zoom lever arm, and the shutter fell off.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We then removed part -1, the shutter lever which is blue plastic, and the spring that holds it.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Part 101, the little winding gear fell out then. When re-assembling, this piece will be held on by the winding cam. It simply didn't fall off until now.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We then pried off the circuit board with the little screwdriver and a pocket knife. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We popped off the little plastic insert in the back of the camera and a little metal lever in the front and then the only thing remaining was the plastic frame.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
We met in Furnas 621 at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 12, 2007.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The only tools used were a small screw driver and a pocket knife, and we only used them when we had to pry something off.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It took only one hour to take the camera apart and then study it and put some of the parts together again to see how they fit together, as most of the time things were just falling off. &lt;br /&gt;

The Ryobi Corner Cat Finish Sander is used for light, detailed sanding. It runs on 120V AC power at a speed of 12,000 orbits per minutes. It features an ergonomic comfort grip, a dust bag, triangular pad design, and velcro for easy removal of sandpaper. &lt;br /&gt;

*Initially, we believed the Ryobi Corner Cat was used for sanding and polishing wood and other surfaces. &lt;br /&gt;
*We thought it worked by converting electrical AC power from an outlet into mechanical energy using a motor. &lt;br /&gt;
*We assumed the vibration was due to a rotating weight much like the ones in cell phones or gaming controllers. &lt;br /&gt;
*It sounded much like a vacuum and the presence of a dustbag meant that there was a suction component involved within the sander. &lt;br /&gt;
*We estimated that the sander contained 37 components all made of either plastic, rubber, aluminum, copper, canvas or velcro.&lt;br /&gt;

This project consisted of disassembling and reassembling the Ryobi Router.  The router is a power tool that is designed to make cuts into wood or laminate bases.  It is a cordless unit that runs on a 18 volt battery source (not supplied) and ultimately turns electrical energy into mechanical energy.  The router was broken down into four major components: the clip-on cover, the plastic housing, the translucent base and finally the motor.  Once we determined what the main components were, we then began the disassembly process, looking at each major component one at a time.  From there, the major components were broken down into individual parts and were documented accordingly.  Once fully disassembled, our group began to think about why the router was constructed the way it was.  One of the main questions asked was &amp;quot;how do all of the components and individual parts work together to ensure that the product operates and stays together?&amp;quot;  After thorough documentation of the disassembly, we reversed the process to reassemble the router.  Since good notes were taken, this went quite smoothly.  Once back together, we documented changes that we thought could be made and why.  All in all, this project allowed us to see how and why the Ryobi router operates the way it does.&lt;br /&gt;

As mentioned before in the executive summary, our group disassembled the Ryobi router.  It was a small portable device used for making cuts into wood or laminate surfaces.   It operates on an 18 volt battery that is not supplied.  It will not run on AC power as there was no power cord option with this unit.  The motor generates 26,000 rpm when operating which allows for maximum power and less of a chance for the motor to get bogged down when cutting.  Right from the beginning, we could tell that the unit was made primarily of plastic, although we were not sure what type until we disassembled the router.  As far as the Group 11 members, John Kostadinov was the group leader and helped to assign parts and kept a watch over the entire project.  Tom Consolazio contributed to some of the research and created the final presentation in which he also presented.  George Stamatros helped to take photos of the unit before, during and after the assembly and helped in the disassembly and reassembly of the router.  Mike Bednarz worked on the disassembly and reassembly of the router.  He also documented steps needed to disassemble and reassemble the router.  And finally Anthony Hussak also worked on the disassembly and reassembly of the router and helped to document components, materials used and steps for all of the process.  He also aided in creating an outline presentation for Tom which covered basic facts needed for the presentation.&lt;br /&gt;

Before the disassembly of the router, we guessed that it was made up of 10 to 15 components and had 5 to 6 different types of materials.  We knew that it took an 18 volt battery for operation but we were unable to test the router to see if it worked since there was no battery.  Overall, there was not much that could be done before the disassembly since this was a relatively small device that was not very complex in nature.  Once assumptions were made, we took pictures of how it looked and then began a methodical approach to disassembly. &lt;br /&gt;

==Description==&lt;br /&gt;
This product is a one-time use disposable, waterproof camera manufactured by Kodak. It has 23 distinct parts with the majority being made of ABS Plastic and by injection molding.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
== How It Works ==&lt;br /&gt;
The disposable camera is all mechanical with no electrical components (the exception is a camera with a flash, where a circuit board and battery are included, but that is not the case in this model). &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When the photographer depresses the shutter button (which is actually just an extension of the &amp;quot;Viewfinder&amp;quot;), the button moves the &amp;quot;Shutter Lever&amp;quot; to one side, rotating the &amp;quot;Shutter&amp;quot; until the &amp;quot;Shutter Spring&amp;quot; forces the &amp;quot;Shutter Lever&amp;quot; to return to a halfway position. The &amp;quot;Shutter&amp;quot; cannot be rotated again until the &amp;quot;Shutter Lever&amp;quot; is reset. The &amp;quot;Shutter&amp;quot; remains open for only a fraction of a second, as the &amp;quot;Shutter Spring&amp;quot; retracts it as soon as the &amp;quot;Shutter Lever&amp;quot; passes, allowing light to pass through both lenses to the exposed film. During the &amp;quot;Shutter Lever&amp;quot; movement, the &amp;quot;Camshaft&amp;quot; is offset slightly by an extension from the &amp;quot;Shutter Lever&amp;quot; which releases the &amp;quot;Film Advance Lock.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;

With the picture taken, the photographer winds the &amp;quot;Film Advance Wheel&amp;quot; which rolls up film into the &amp;quot;Film Canister&amp;quot; and clicks off numbers on the &amp;quot;Frame Counter.&amp;quot; The film is slotted onto the &amp;quot;Sprocket&amp;quot; which is joined to the &amp;quot;Camshaft&amp;quot; causing both to rotate with the film. When the &amp;quot;Camshaft&amp;quot; rotates a complete cycle, the &amp;quot;Shutter Lever&amp;quot; is reset and the &amp;quot;Film Advance Lock&amp;quot; returns to its original position preventing operation of the &amp;quot;Film Advance Wheel&amp;quot;. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The purpose of the &amp;quot;Exterior Front&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;Exterior Back&amp;quot; covers are to protect the camera from the elements. The &amp;quot;Outside Film Advance&amp;quot; allows the rotation of the &amp;quot;Film Advance Wheel&amp;quot; despite the exterior covers. The &amp;quot;Washer&amp;quot; seals the hole between the &amp;quot;Outside Film Advance&amp;quot; shaft and the &amp;quot;Film Advance Wheel&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The &amp;quot;Lens Holder&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;Eyehole Holder&amp;quot; serve to hold their respective components in place. The &amp;quot;Eyehole Cover&amp;quot; allows only a small fraction of the incoming light to be focused on the &amp;quot;Inner Lens&amp;quot; giving a sharper, clearer image.&lt;br /&gt;
