- King Rat. Clavell. Pretty good story of corruption, leadership, and men in a Japanese prison camp.
- Disclosure. Crichton.
- Shardik. Adams. Interesting tale of rebellion and national mysticism based around bear worship.
- Star Trek: The Return. Shatner.
- The Avatar. Anderson.
- The Visitant. O'Neal Gear and Gear.
- Cross the Stars. Drake. Military genre sci-fi.
- The Bachman Books. King. Some pretty good stories, notably The Long Walk and The Running Man.
- The Mote in God's Eye. Nivan and Pournelle. Catching story of alien contact and containment.
- Wall Around a Star. Pohl and Williamson.
- Colony. Bova.
- The Master Mind of Mars. Burroughs.
- The Naked Sun. Asimov. A good Elijah Baley story.
- The Last Starship from Earth. Boyd.
- Skeleton Crew. King. Some pretty good stories---notably regarding a certain monkey!

- The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. Lovecraft.
- On Basilisk Station. Weber. An Honor Harrington story. Interesting starship combat.
- Retief Unbound. Laumer.
- Retief of the CDT. Laumer.
- Retief to the Rescue. Laumer.
- Retief: Diplomat at Arms. Laumer.
- Retief: Envoy to New Worlds. Laumer. The Retief novels are quite silly, but they're actually a lot of fun and fairly interesting.
- The Deep Range. Clarke. Interesting story, unusual setting: Whale herders and rangers in the near future.
