\'\'\'Group 9 - Leaf Blower\'\'\'

\'\'\'Group Members:\'\'\' Pete Eichensehr, Nick Barnhard, Jason Santangelo, Chris Mayer, Travis Zappia


Executive Summary

The purpose of this project is to enhance the understanding that we, as students, have for for the engineering decisions that go into the design manufacturing, and production of the leaf blower. As a group, we are pleased to say that we have learned exactly how the leaf blower works, and what factors contributed to its development.


To accomplish this, we used a hands-on method consisting of the following steps:


1.) \'\'\'\'\'Physically deconstructed the leaf blower into its most basic components.\'\'\'\'\'


2.) \'\'\'\'\'Created a profile of the product, documenting each component and how the individual subsystems interact with each other.\'\' \'\'\'


3.) \'\'\'\'\'Analysed each component and related the component\'s development to the four factors. During the development, questions about functionality, aesthetics, and manufacturing had to be addressed.\'\'\'\'\'


4.) \'\'\'\'\'Design revisions were suggested on both the component and system level. These were based on influences from society, the economy, the environment, and the geographic location where the blower would be used.\'\'\'\'\'


5.)\'\'\'\'\' The leaf blower was then reassembled to its original condition.\'\'\'\'\'


\'\'\'What we found:\'\'\'

The leaf blower is an efficient and economic way to move leaves and debris from one area to another. It consists of a simple two stroke engine that spins a fan and creates a powerful flow of air that moves the debris. Many important factors were considered in the design and manufacturing of this product. Cost, effects on the environment, and ease of use are all important factors that contributed to the leaf blowers current design. These factors are further detailed in gate 3.


Although the leaf blower is a very effective tool, we feel that there are several improvements that can be made to the current design. Potential improvements are detailed in gates 3 and 4.


In conclusion, it is fair to say that engineering played an important role in the creation of the leaf blower. Without engineers to analyse how a design consideration would effect functionality, cost, and ease of use, the leaf blower would be incapable of functioning as it is intended to. Every component must be individually considered to form a safe and reliable final product.
