Executive Summary

Craftsman Impact Wrench new in box

In the MAE-277 –Introduction to Mechanical Engineering course each student is required to participate in a group project. This project consists of forming an engineering team to dissect and analyze a specific product available for the consumer market. Group 26 agreed on de-engineering a Craftsman 1/2” impact wrench for the term research project. This project allows engineering students to work as a research team to complete the task at hand. As a group it is essentially to derive schedule and management proposal so all task are completed in accordance to the due date. Each member with gain a sharp set of skills needed to compete in the future workface as a Mechanical Engineer. Since this is the first major term project in the University at Buffalo engineering program our group needs to understand how to work efficiently and productively within the time allotted. Although mistakes will be made it is essentially that we learn from professional criticism and make adjustments when needed. Each group member has strengths and weaknesses when that will be molded and shaped throughout the duration of each gate. It is essential that we present all information in a technically written format that is easy to follow and understand for the reader.

Product Overview

De-engineering group 26 chose to dissect a Craftsman ½” Impact wrench for analysis of its internal mechanical components. This product was designed to run off a pneumatic power source to perform a simply task. Compressed gas is used to generate mechanical and rotational energy enabling the power tool to loosen and tighten lug nuts and bolts. The rapid succession of impulse along with a high operation torque output makes it quick and easy to do so. Although this may seem like a very simple task, there are many internal mechanical component interactions confined in the power tool. This product will be completely disassembled to see each how component system works together.

Gate 1: Project Planning

In gate 1 we will start the planning process of our group project. Product Management Proposal needs to be generated to provide a plane of action to reverse engineer our impact wrench. A disassembly plan will be made with the specific tools needed along with an initial inspection plan for dissection. Our group will also prepare an initial preparation and assessment overview without taking apart the product or usage of exploded parts diagram

Gate 2: Product Dissection

Gate 2 is the groundwork of planning the dissection and organizing our team. The craftsman impact wrench will be completely disassembled piece by piece. It is essential to document each step of the dissection process and describe how every part mechanically interacts with one another. Multiple tables will be used to provide a “how to” guide for disassembly and reassembly.

Gate 3: Product Analysis

Gate 3 includes a detailed analysis of the impact wrenches components and subsystems. We will then identify the components function, material usage and manufacturing processes used for production. A solid modeling render will be generated from Solid work, Auto Cad or Creo for 3-5 individual components along with an assembly drawing representation.

Gate 4: Product Analysis

Gate 4 the Craftsman impact wrench will be re assembled to make a detailed conclusion from the past gathered information. A step by step guide will be constructed to describe each process along with any challenges we encountered. We also must identify the mechanism our tool uses to generate a specific motion or control system behavior. Design recommendations will be derived at a system level that addresses any global, economic, societal or environmental concerns.

Gate 5-Final Delivery

In Gate 5 we must finalize the technical report along with any preparations for class presentation of our product dissection. The Wiki page should be formatted accordingly and any revision will be completed. A five minute presentation must be made in front of the class focused on design recommendations for Craftsman’s future impact wrench design.
