Introduction

In 1959 Barbie was introduced. Launched by Mattel, one of the world’s largest toy company (Fortune 500), and it's popularity instantly increased. The depth to which the Barbie doll has been developed today is astonishing, with Barbie being the star in multiple books published by Random House and major motion pictures. Her biography has come to include her many accomplishments, which includes the ownership of a myriad of vehicles, from pink convertible corvettes to jeeps. In the case of the latter, Fisher-Price, with its line of Power Wheels ride-on toy cars, developed the Barbie Jammin’ Jeep in the 1990s. It was targeted toward young girls of age 3 and up, and had a maximum weight capacity of 130lbs. Features included two speeds forwards (2.5 and 5 miles-per-hour,) one speed in reverse, and a working FM radio, as well as Power-Lock brakes, (Fisher-Price, 2010).

Goal of Group 22 is to successfully complete the following Project Gates by dissecting, evaluating and improving the components of the Barbie Jammin' Jeep.

Project Gates

Gate 1: Preparation and Assessment

The first gate involves project planning. The group had to develop a plan to reverse engineer the Barbie Jammin' Jeep, and manage it's time according. Without any dissection, the product was analyzed to become familiar with it and create an overall successful outline to complete the gates. Within Gate 1, the sections below were developed:

  • Work Proposal
  • Management Proposal
  • Initial Assessment

Gate 1

Gate 2: Dissection

This gate outlines the dissection of the Barbie Jammin' Jeep Wrangler. It is annotated and includes photos of each step taken to disassemble the product. The gate is broken up into three major categories, which involve purpose, project management, and product archaeology. The latter is broken into sub-sections, which are as follows:

  • Preliminary Review of Project Management
  • Product Archaeology
  • Document the connection of subsystems

Gate 2

Gate 3: Evaluation

Gate 3 is an evaluation of the product after a complete dissection. The group completed a detailed analysis of the product, examining the Barbie Jammin' Jeep at the component and subsystem level, and gathered detailed information on how the components and subsystems work together to allow for the overall function of the Jeep. Gate 3 is broken down into 4 parts, which include:

  • Component Summary
  • Product Analysis
  • Solid Modeled Assembly
  • Engineering Analysis

Gate 3 also includes a Coordination Review, which goes over the causes of corrective action within the group. This includes challenges between group members, as well as general obstacles in the project.

Gate 4: Explanation

This gate is the product reassembly. Here we put the Barbie Jeep back together after evaluating its components and systems. The difference between taking apart vs putting together is recognized.
