Project Management: Request for Proposal
The Eureka Easy Clean Hand Held Vacuum that we will be dissecting is not an overly complex piece of machinery. As such the process involved with its dis-assembly is very similar in nature to that of its reassembly, simply in the reverse order. The vacuum can and should be taken apart without causing any damage to the actual item. If properly done, the di-sassembly should take approximately 1 hour to complete and the reassembly should take no more than 1.5 hours.

In order to take apart the vacuum the first step is to take off all of the appliances that can be readily detached without the use of any of the above tools. The first of which is the crevice tool that can be used to extend the reach of the suction hose. This item can be simply pulled out from its storage place in the base of the vacuum. The others are the dust cup and filter. These are removed by moving the power switch to the “open cup” position and lifting the dust cup containing the filter away from the vacuum. Next we must use the different screw drivers and hex keys to take apart the outer shell of the eureka vacuum and expose its interworking’s. Without an exploded image of the vacuum and due to the lack of an extensive user guide this is as far as we can specifically get given our current knowledge of the vacuum. It will obviously require further dissection but we must open up the outer shell before we discuss the process after that point. If any of the parts are particularly difficult to remove the long nose pliers can aid in the removal. When the vacuum must later be reassembled it can be done by reversing the above process.
The main challenge involved with the eureka vacuum’s dissection is that it is a fairly small mechanical object. This means that disassembling its various parts will require some precision as the screws, springs, and parts contained in vacuum will be small and require the technician involved in its dis-assembly to be very meticulous.
Thus far our team seems to have the crucial keys to succeed for this project. We are all willing to work hard and put in the time to achieve each Gate. We also have a fairly good knowledge of the fundamental underlying principles that go into mechanical devices i.e. Physics, Electricity, Thermodynamics, etc. As we do not have much prior knowledge to the specific interworking’s of a vacuum this basic knowledge should prove beneficial. Lastly we all seem to have the patience that is needed when trying to disassemble such a small object that may require a lot of precision.
Our team presents the unique case in which our members are from different countries of the world. Although this mostly creates a positive situation it does create somewhat of a culture/language barrier between our group members. This can prove to be problematic during group meetings if our members have difficulty communicating amongst each other. In order to solve this issue the best course of action is to spend increased amounts of time together, which will allow us to grow accustomed to different accents and more comfortable in our communication together. We can also work to do a large portion of our work on the computer, that way no words are lost in the translation. The other main weakness our team presents is a heavy work schedule by all of our group members. This is fitting since we all have the same major and thus must take very similar workloads. The solution to this is time management and proper allotment of tasks.

The Product Proposal and Gate 1 was not included in this timeline become it either is past the due date or is due now. There are about two and a half weeks between each gate and ten days for the final delivery. Since the time given to do the final delivery is less than the gates, there will be less meetings. Each member will be assign their work at least two weeks prior to the due date, an exception being the final delivery. The members are expected to have their work done two to three days before the due date in order for the Project Manager to review their work.
Our group will meet whenever it is necessary to finish our work. If we do not finish it time on one day, we will continue to meet another day until our work is complete. We can meet up on all weekdays from 5:00 PM until about 8:00 PM. However, one member (Tina Zhang) will be unable to be there the whole time on Tuesdays and Thursdays due to class. If we need more time or are unable to meet up during those times, we will meet up early on the weekdays or even on the weekends if needed. Our usual meeting place is at the bottom floor of Capen Library and if there are no seats available, we can relocate to Lockwood Library. If there were to be a group conflict, the members would both explain their sides of the conversation and there will be a majority rule. Since there are five members in the group, the side in which three or more members agree on wins. Each person is expected to do his/her own part. In the situation if a member was not pulling his/her own weight, the other members will go to an instructor's office and hold a conference on what to do there. Product Archaeology: Preparation and Initial Assessment
In order to successfully complete the product dissection later during Gate 2, we have read the manual and done some research on the Eureka Easy Clean Handheld Vacuum. The following initial assessment would be vital in the later process of dissecting the product successfully.
Based on the research we have done, the product was approximately developed and released for sales during December 2008 and is lasting till today with good sales. This product was first assembled in China due to its cheaper production cost. At that period, it was the global recession and probably that is the reason the production was delayed to the later months of the year (when the economy slowly started picking up).
The product was intended to be sold in all regions and countries considering its functions being universally needed. The main intended impact on the users were to ease the work of cleaning as it is equipped with many functions that would make it much easier to use than a regular vacuum.

This product works like any other normal vacuum does and hence use the following energies:
- Electrical energy
- Mechanical energy
- Kinetic energy
- Energy due to pressure change
Electrical energy flows from the plug through the cord to the motor. The motor then uses this energy to produce mechanical energy as we all know. The mechanical energy works on the turbine and its belt uses kinetic energy to spin around. This produces some sort of “vacuum” due to the low pressure and the pressure difference between the atmosphere and the vacuum (atmospheric pressure is higher than in the vacuum) causes the dirt to be sucked into the vacuum.
Based on resources found, there were 9 components which had been identified. These components are listed as follows:

All the components used are designed to be simple. When all these materials are fixed together, the motor powers them up by using electricity. This vacuum comes with a crevice tool which makes it easier to use the vacuum.
- The main material used in this product is durable plastic. The outer layer is made entirely of plastic, except for the 20 foot long cord, which is made of copper wire insulated with rubber exterior.
- The interior of the vacuum consists of the brushroll, the filter ,and the motor. The brushroll is made of fibers which is used in the form of bristles to allow effectiveness of the vacuum to collect debris. On the other hand, the filter is made up of clothe for easy cleaning.
- The vacuum also consists of other materials which cannot be seen. These materials are vacuum greases and belts connected to the motor for the vacuum to function.
