The Weed Eater Featherlite 20C string trimmer is a product designed for the average homeowners who maintain their own lawns.  It is the base model of many other more heavy duty Weed Eater string trimmers, but its function meets the needs of the consumer with its performance and low price.  Throughout the past semester, this group has dissected this string trimmer allowing us to analyze the individual components and understand the underlying considerations that went into its design and manufacturing.

After disassembling the string trimmer we found various components and different subsystems that worked together to achieve the overall function of the product: trimming edges and hard to reach places of the lawn.  This is actuated by the operator pulling the starter handle which causes the spark plug to fire.  This spark mixes with a gasoline/oil mixture resulting in the translational kinetic energy of the piston.  This is converted to rotational kinetic energy by the flywheel, which transfers the energy to the drive shaft down to the cutting head resulting in the spinning of the cutting line.  This disassembly process took place in gate two where it was fully documented.  The components and their connections were also analyzed and documented during this gate.

Gate three goes more in depth about the individual components: how they were manufactured, what material they are made of, and their function.  Additional analysis was done on the various subsystems including their form and function and complexity and how the four factors affected their design.  This gate also includes three design revisions at the component/subsystem level that the group felt would best improve the product and optimize its design.  For each revision, the group considered how it would affect the current design and what changes would need to be made to it along with the manufacturing processes used in order for the revision to be possible.

In the fourth gate the string trimmer was reassembled.  In doing so, we compared the assembly process to the disassembly process along with its original assembly.  The group submitted three additional design revisions at the system level.  The revisions dealt mainly with increasing safety of the string trimmer during use.  In recommending the three revisions, we took into account the effects they would have on the manufacturing of the product and the four factors.  We took the biggest look at the economic impact of the revisions and how it would affect the marketability of the product.  Looking at this the group decided that with the already low price of the string trimmer, the revisions would not greatly increase the cost of the product thus the positives mainly outweighed the negatives.
