Serated Washer

Material: Steel

Quantity: 7

Manufacturing Process: Stamped out of a sheet of steel.

Function: Prevents the screw from slipping or un-tightening.

Has serrated edges that digs into material when screw is screwed into threads and the washer is compressed in between.

Machined Steel was selected to make this component because it is very hard, and strong. Its needs to be hard and strong especially on the serrated edges so they can grab into the material they are being put on.

Only force is compression force.

Magnitude of compression is estimated at 10 lbs.

The material choice does effect the process. With softer metals a different process might have been needed to get the serrated surface finish.

Each manufacturing process was chosen for this component because it was the easiest, fastest, and cheapest way to do it at high volumes of product.

The component is functional.

On a scale from 1-5, 1 being the simple like a ball, and 5 being complex like a engine, this component is a 1. This component is simple.
