Grp27: Right Plate
Material: Cast Aluminum
Manufacturing Process: Heated liquid aluminum is cooled in a ribbed mold to form the right plate and it’s screw holes.
Function: To protect the right side of the compressor as well as allow easy access into the inside of the compressor for easier assembly and repairs.
Cast aluminum was chosen for the right plate because it is light and yet durable and is efficient to produce. It is also cheaper then other metal alternatives.
There are four screw forces applied to the right plate as well as gravity. The forces exerted on the right plate and by the right plate effectively cancel each other out.
The material choice does not affect the manufacturing process because there is no simpler way to produce this then to make a mold.
The shape does not affect the manufacturing process because the mold is not difficult to make.
The cast aluminum manufacturing process was chosen for the right plate because it allows for the cheap and efficient production of durable and light plates.
This component has a center dome to allow the crankshaft to fully extend and is ribbed for further protection of the crankshaft and pistons.
This component is functional, but it is also cosmetic with the ribs.
I believe the cast aluminum manufacturing process was chosen as a simple, cheap, and efficient way to produce durable, light, and function right plates.
The right plate is not complex being only a plate. There are many more complex systems, even though it is ribbed, a screw is more complex with its threading.
